Muddling is a bartending technique that involves bruising citrus peels, berries, peppers or herbs like mint or cilantro leaves so that they release their natural essential oils and give flavor to a drink. You can buy a muddler (which looks like a tapered stick with a blunt end) or you can use a metal or wooden spoon. To do it, put the ingredients to be muddled in the bottom of a thick glass or cocktail shaker and smash them around with the muddler. Add the rest of the drink’s ingredients and stir or share.
