If you’ve had the day from hell — you spilled iced coffee on your fave blouse, your unread-messages inbox has reached its all-time high, and you spent your lunch hour in a text-message fight with your sister — it might not be the best time to do a favor for someone you’re close with, whether it's your guy or a friend. Here's why:

A new study from the University of Arizona surveyed 164 couples and found that those who did something nice for their romantic partner after a stressful day did not report having stronger feelings of commitment to the relationship. If the favor was done for their significant other after a normal day, that cuddly committed feeling definitely increased. We checked with the study authors, and they said the same thing could happen with your friends!
If you’re the type of person who always makes sacrifices, like agreeing to go shopping with your friend for date-night dresses even if all you want to do is go home and watch your shows on DVR, you might not be doing your friendship any favors.

“All kinds of relationships involve give and take, but before giving, you need to make sure you have the resources to do so,” study author Casey J. Totenhagen, Ph.D., research scientist at the University of Arizona, told us. “A really hassling and draining day can deplete those resources. So although doing a favor for a friend is likely be a good thing in most circumstances and an investment in the friendship, if I’m doing those favors when I’ve had a really stressful day, one might not expect to see those same benefits.”

Another potential factor: You might be less likely to be pissed if you tack on a good deed for a super-close friend, the study authors say, but if it’s a “toxic friend” (think: your most notorious frenemy), it could tip your mood from fine to incredibly frazzled.

The takeaway? If you’re at your wit’s end at the EOD, consider putting your “me time” first and your best bud on the back burner — for now, anyway.

This delicious recipe makes an excellent dinner, but you can also make it ahead, or double it and have the leftovers for the next day's lunch. You can substitute brown rice pasta for the whole wheat pasta if you avoid gluten, or use white pasta — although white pasta is not as good for you and tends to stimulate the appetite, so go easy on it.

As for cheese, you can leave out the smoked mozzarella and instead use ricotta, feta, or shredded Parmesan. You don't need very much of these high-flavor cheeses to get a satisfying cheese experience, but don't leave it out. The protein balances the carbs. Serve with a salad. Enjoy!

Serves 2

Ingredients:

1/2 cup whole wheat fusilli
2 teaspoons olive oil
2 to 3 cloves of garlic, smashed, peeled, and minced (whack the cloves with the side of a large knife for easier peeling)
4 Roma tomatoes, chopped
Salt and pepper, to taste
1/2 cup fresh shredded basil plus 2 tablespoons for garnish
1 tablespoon toasted pine nuts
2 ounces smoked mozzarella, shredded

Preparation:

1. Cook the pasta according to package directions, until firm but tender (al dente).
2. While the pasta is cooking, heat the olive oil in a nonstick skillet. Sauté the garlic in the oil until golden but not brown. Add the tomatoes, salt, and pepper. Simmer until the pasta is done cooking.
3. Remove the pasta from the water with a slotted spoon and add it to the sauce. Add about 1/4 cup of the pasta cooking water as you go. This helps thicken the sauce.

"bethenny" debuts September 9, and one blogger is already convinced she’d be the ideal guest.

Megan McGrane of the blog HealthGeekChic has always been such a fan of Bethenny’s that she wrote a post with five reasons why she should be on the show.

The most personal reason is the fact that Bethenny has inspired Megan to change her life for the better: She’s become a “gluten-free goddess” and aspiring yogi, not to mention going back to school to become a physician assistant.

Thanks to her homegirl Bethenny, Megan is herself now the kind of woman who can inspire others.
When you were finishing school, how did you decide you wanted more?
After I finished college at the University of Pittsburgh, where I completed my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees, I had a great job, but knew deep down that my calling was to practice medicine. I needed to summon my courage to, as Bethenny says, go for mine. It can be scary to pursue a dream because it requires taking a leap of faith and risking failure.

How did you get into healthier eating?
Bethenny was the first person I had ever heard of being a natural foods chef, and I wanted to learn more. Every time she cooked or mentioned recipes on the show, my ears perked up and I grabbed a pen! I tried every recipe of hers I could find until she wrote “Skinnygirl Dish.”

Also, being a Division I college athlete, I was always keyed in to healthy eating to keep my body performing at its best. Toward the end of college, I began having health struggles and found out I was intolerant to gluten.

Cooking gluten-free was a huge challenge and I had a lot of learning to do! Reading “Naturally Thin” and “Skinnygirl Dish” really helped me come into my own in the kitchen.

What are your favorite Bethenny recipes?
Boo Boo Banana Bread will always be #1 in my book for sentimental reasons. It was my first successful baked good that I made gluten-free that knocked my socks off.

Why did you start your blog?
I first thought about starting a blog when I found that friends and family would call or email with health questions or ask me about health claims and fads they were seeing. I would research the topic and send back a response with data and sources, which they loved. The blog was a way of getting that information to the masses and sharing what I found. The blog has given me a way to connect with a community about health, fitness, food, and the mind-body connection. It has also given me a voice to start the conversation around health for those of us with autoimmune disorders; a conversation which women often shy away from.

What are some of the health issues you’re dealing with?
I am an auto-immune warrior! Like many women, I have autoimmune disorder: Reynaud’s disease, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, and gluten intolerance. I know many women do not talk about their struggles with autoimmunity, and hope that I can be a voice for others with similar diagnoses.

Why do you think you relate to Bethenny so strongly?
Bethenny is honest and unapologetic about what she wants. She goes after her goals and does not take no for an answer. Her attitude of stopping at nothing to make your dreams your reality really resonated with me.

Follow Megan on Twitter @meg_mcgrane.

Where you’ve seen him:

You may have checked him and his short-shorts out in “G.B.F.,” a film that just premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Brock’s role: an uber-conservative Mormon jock who’s more than a little interested in playing for the other team. In real life, though, this Oklahoma-born hottie is looking for a lady love to share his alternately glam and down-to-earth lifestyle with. Maybe it’ll be you…

Quirky Brock facts:

What are you working on now? Any upcoming projects you can talk about?

Currently, I’m looking for the next thing! I’m writing a project with a friend, and we’re going to write a pitch. And I have a new film coming out — it’s called “Vanished,” and it’s set to come out on Lifetime. I also have another film that’s hitting festivals right now called “Franny.”

What’s your screenplay about?

It’s sort of a Western: It’s about this backpacker who gets into a car wreck and wakes up in this magical Western town, almost like an Oz-type place. It’s kind of like a cerebral thriller, and something I’ve been working on for a long time now. I have a writing partner, and we kind of developed it by doing some improv in the woods about three years ago, and so we’ve been developing all sorts of concepts. It’s a very visual piece.

What’s the best joke or comment you’ve gotten about being in “G.B.F”?

The funny thing is every time I tell people I’m in the movie, I always get asked if I’m the gay best friend. And I have to say, “No, I’m the homophobic jock.” I mean, there were so many funny things — the dynamic on set was so fun. Everybody was having a good time. Another funny thing about it is my little brother’s name is Hamilton, so I had a nice connection to the role through the name.

In your next movie role, in “Franny,” your title is literally “Hunk.” How do you feel about being seen as a hunk?

I just think of it as a flattering thing. Hopefully it’s not discrediting ever — but the “hunk” role in that movie is really funny. It’s a story about a girl who’s overweight, and she’s trying to find the love of her life, and at the beginning of it, I play her dream-sequence man. I mean, like, that role is a nice comedic role, very intentionally cheesy, that kind of thing. But being thought of a hunk can’t be the worst thing in the world, you know? [Laughs.]

What’s something you wish people knew about you?

I’ve been acting for a long time, but I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma, and I’m really passionate about outdoor sports — I like to play sports and rock-climb and stay very active, and I also study martial arts, and I’ve been competing in jujitsu lately, so in my off time I spend a lot of time preparing for tournaments, so — I mean, I have a lot of things going on. I make music. I write.

Is there a little-known piece of trivia about you that people might be surprised to know?

Dude, I’m, like, crazy — I have all sorts of stuff. I rode my motorcycle through my school in high school. I was probably 15; I used to ride dirt bikes, and my parents weren’t home or something, so I got my dirt bike out, and a friend of mine opens up the emergency exit for me on the other end like we planned it, and I had a shirt over my head, kind of turban-style, and I drove it through school. The janitors were chasing me, and it was all this crazy stuff. We busted out of the emergency exit, we made a clean getaway, and I never got caught. I certainly don’t regret it!

Is there any rule or life philosophy you live by?

“The dead are not alive, and the living will not die.” It’s a quote from a gnostic gospel — it’s like a book that wasn’t accepted into the Bible, and it’s supposed to be a quote from Jesus — and it basically just means, “Live your life, and choose life.” A lot of people go throughout their lives and they don’t really live actively, and they hide away and stay on Facebook all day, and you should get out there and do what you love and what makes you happy.

We have to ask you one more nosy question: What do you look for in a woman?

I think that the most important thing to me is honesty. I’m a very loyal person, and I like someone to be their genuine self. I want the kind of girl who I can march down the red carpet, and she’ll be the hottest thing there, and then I want to go three months in the woods with her, and she won’t need to shower or shave her legs or anything.

Brock, we’re putting our flannel shirt on just thinking about it...

Choosing to go food shopping when you’re starving is never a great idea — that’s when buying a double package of double-chocolate cookies starts sounding like a sensible choice — but a new study published recently in “JAMA Internal Medicine” took that idea a step further.

Not only should you not shop when you’re hungry to prevent buying high-calorie foods, researchers found, but don’t shop at night either. Study participants bought healthier foods between 1 pm and 4 pm than between 4 pm and 7 pm. That’s news all of us can use: If you can avoid it, don’t shop right before dinner, when you haven’t eaten for hours.

Now we know the don’ts, but what are the dos when it comes to our grocery-store schedule? We chatted with nutritionist Mark Macdonald, author of “Body Confidence,” and nutritionist JJ Virgin, author of "The Virgin Diet," for a few tips on maximizing and health-ifying your shopping trip:

Researchers say participants had “less intimate feelings and more conflict with their partners on subsequent days.” Fascinating stuff!

The good news is that if you’re in a healthy relationship, that post-dream buzzkill isn’t as big of a deal compared to people in less happy partnerships.

Another huge perk, according to the study, is if you have a sex dream about you and your partner and you’re in a good relationship, you’ll feel lovey-dovey and intimate with him the next day.
Following Angelina Jolie’s announcement, we asked our women’s health expert, Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa, for more info on the BRCA gene blood test and insurance coverage related to breast cancer.

Following Angelina Jolie’s announcement via a New York Times op-ed that she underwent a double mastectomy after learning of her increased risk for breast cancer, women have had questions about what Jolie’s experience and the BRCA gene test could mean for their lives.

We turned to our women’s health expert, Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa, for more information on the BRCA gene blood test and insurance coverage as it relates to breast cancer.

Mastectomies, breast reconstruction, and breast cancer treatment are covered by insurance.

The BRCA blood test, which looks for gene mutations, might not be covered by insurance.

“BRCA coverage is variable depending on the insurance plan, and the patient's medical and family history,” Dr. Raj says. “Someone who is not at increased risk for breast cancer would never be able to have a BRCA test covered by insurance.”

A preventive mastectomy, without a BRCA test, is sometimes covered by insurance.

“For example, they may cover it if the woman has other strong risk factors for breast cancer like abnormal (pre-cancerous) cells in the breast, chest radiation exposure, or a strong family history of breast cancer,” Dr. Raj says.

If a woman has the risk factors for a mutated BRCA gene — if she’s had breast cancer before age 50, if she has a family history of both breast and ovarian cancer, or if she has close relatives with breast cancer — insurance might cover the test.

“Generally if a woman meets the qualifications, then it becomes a personal choice, and if she wants to do it, her doctor can try to advocate to get the insurance company to cover it,” Dr. Raj says.

If a woman fits the BRCA mutation profile, it is probably smart to have the test if she is in a financial position to do so.

“I am always a big believer in prevention, but not knowing someone's financial circumstances, I can't say if it is worth it,” Dr. Raj says. “If they can afford it, then yes, I think they should do it."

Sexual attractiveness and beauty do not hinge on whether a woman has her breasts.

“I am happy a female icon like Angelina Jolie has spoken so honestly about her experience,” Dr. Raj says. “Not only does she raise awareness about this all too common killer of women, but she also lets women who have undergone mastectomies know that they are not alone, and can still feel gorgeous and sexy.”
