National Entrepreneurship Month: Make Your To-Do List Work For You
I love to talk about business and write about business and be in business. November is National Entrepreneurship Month, which is right up my alley. In honor of the occasion, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite biz tips each week this month.
Being an entrepreneur means being a self-starter. It also probably means that no two days are the same. So how can you be productive and stay focused? A to-do list is a great tool, but if you don’t manage yours in a way that works for you, you’ll only be slowing yourself down.
Here are a few tips to help you make your to-do list work for you:
Keep it simple. Having a to-do list a full page long is setting yourself up to fail. Every time you think about something that hasn’t been done, you’ll only be stressing yourself out – and making yourself less productive. Part of being a successful entrepreneur is prioritizing. Keep your list short and sweet. If you could only do one thing today to move your business forward, what would that thing be? Put that in the #1 spot.
Write your to-do list the night before. This will help you stay focused and start your day with clarity. You know exactly what needs to be done and when, so all you have to do is make it happen.
Get specific. Set yourself up for success by including any details you need to get the job done. For example, if you need to call someone, include their phone number on your to-do list so you don’t waste time scrambling for it later.
Treat spontaneous tasks critically. Remember what I said about prioritizing your workload? Whenever an “urgent” task comes in, think about whether it actually needs to be done yesterday or whether there’s a more efficient way to get it done.
Make time for your life. Don’t forget to leave room for fun activities and hobbies in your day, even if you have to include them on your to-do list. This is a good way to keep yourself from burning out.
