As a 35-year-old entrepreneur and mother of four (yes, four!), her advice will inspire you to turn your dreams into reality...
What's your business advice to young women?
Many times I get suggestions from people, "Oh this is hot right now, I think you should do something like that… I think you should work on a certain collection." For me, it is very important, and I would say this to anyone starting a business: focus on one thing that you're good at and stick to it. And make that 110%. Pick the strongest asset for you and make that amazing. When you put all your passion into it and complete it, there is usually success in the end.
As a mom of 4 children and a business owner, how do you balance it all?
I have a wonderful husband who works together with me. We are in the business together, so it really is a partnership. We share the same goal and we share the same aspiration, so when someone needs help — we work together. It's not like he's doing his thing, and I'm doing mine.
Having help at home is also important. On top of that, I have to say, my kids are really good kids. I have a 1-year-old, 7-year-old, 9-year-old and 13-year-old. We are religious, Orthodox Jewish, and one of the biggest commandments that anyone can do in a home is respect your mother and father. My kids are working toward the same goal and are proud of that. My daughter even sketches! It's certainly a family affair.
Where do you find your inspiration when designing from season to season?
I do follow like the Pantone colors of the year, and I watch apparel to see what's going there. Being a NYC girl and growing up and shopping in the most beautiful shops in the world, like Saks and Neiman Marcus, and being around all these amazing women, and so many different cultures, there is so much you can take.
I love some of the Indian and Turkish jewelry. I try to mix and infuse all the culture of our city. That is what comes out in my jewelry as I sit down and sketch.
What jewelry do you recommend wearing to a holiday party?
It's always good to start small and build. I like delicate and soft, and then layer it. I love stacking rings and bangles — that's the concept of our collection. Start with a small pendant, then layer 36-inch necklaces and then 60-inch necklaces. In the daytime, start with a skinny bangle, and then when you go out, keep on layering. It's always classic and always nice, and it really gives that wow factor.
Do you believe in mixing gold and silver jewelry?
I like when it's mixed. I am not into that matchy-matchy. Even if you mix different brands… I like mixing different metals — silver, gold, black, etc. It definitely makes your look more interesting.
For someone looking to purchase their first Freida Rothman piece of jewelry, which would you recommend?
A pendant necklace. Whenever someone asks what's a great gift, I always suggest a necklace. They're easy to give and easy to wear. Rings you have to worry about sizes, and I find earrings are very personal.
Start with a small necklace, and our jewelry begs to be layered, so if you can only afford to buy a small necklace now, later you can buy the 36-inch necklace that comes with it… and add rings later on. You can always come back and keep on stacking.
What jewelry trends are you seeing for 2014?
I am seeing a lot of old gold. Beautiful, nice big hoops — very clean. It's bright and fresh. Very whimsical layered necklaces and skinny old gold bangles mixed with touches of turquoise and mother of pearl. I am also seeing a lot of old gold coming in for spring.
