My Daily Makeup Routine: Sunscreen, Foundation, Concealer, and Brows

I’ve had makeup artists out the wazoo do my makeup, but if I’m heading out for low-key dinner or drinks with girlfriends, I’m doing my face by myself… in my closet. Yep, I’m that kind of girl — holed up and testing out makeup techniques, sometimes when I can’t sleep.

I’m letting you in on the best makeup tips that work for me, but you’ve got to find out what works for you, no matter what a department store or makeup artist tells you. Just do the best you can!

Here are a few easy tips that work really well:

• Sweep SPF 30 onto your face using a makeup brush to spread the sunscreen evenly; use a retractable one if you’re on the go. My dermatologist says any SPF over 30 is a scam and will get you the same level of sun protection.

• Don’t use sponges for foundation — they just suck up all the product. Brushes are way better. I put a tiny bit in my hand and dip the brush into it that way before applying it to my face, making sure to do the neck.

• A small Sonia Kashuk makeup brush works well for applying concealer under the eyes, but my new discovery is that a fluffier eye shadow brush meant for the eye crease is great for spreading the concealer around and eliminating that spackled look.

• I also brush a little under-eye concealer onto the tops of my eyes so everything matches — after that, you can hit blemishes with the brush if you need to.

• I put a little pencil on my brows and then brush them upward, just so everything’s intact. Easy-peasy.

Come back next Wednesday to see the eyeshadow part of my makeup routine — then watch the last part the week after for blush and highlighter tips.

And for great hints about how to spend less on beauty products, check out this segment from the test run of my talk show. All-new episodes will start airing September 9th!

Yes, please let us know what products you are using. I have horrible under eye circles as well and one thing I have noticed lately is that the prodcut doesn't stay where it's supposed to and my skin under my eye's almost looks like (for lack of a better term) chicken skin: small, raised spots where the products is stuck and not blended well at all (even though I do a good job of blending it when I put it on in the morning). I'm 31 and I use an eye cream as well as moisturizer on my skin. Could it be dry skin? Should I be using another product (I currently use Bobbi Brown corrector and concealer and Clinique all about eyes eye cream). Please help!

Bethany, your tip for the foundation brush is fab! I don't like the normal foundation brushes but I just happened to have a brush similar to your foundation brush in my kit and tried it this morning. Wow it is so much quicker, less messy and you only need a small amount. Thank you so much for sharing this with us - looking forward to the next installment especially as it's eye shadow. I have dark brown eyes and like the smokey effect but can never get it right. Lots of love from Sunny Scotland - yes it's true the sun is shining wooohooo! xx

I agree with Nancy. What is the name of the concealer for under the eyes? I have tried everything to try to get rid of dark circles with no success. Since you have had every Tom,**** and Harry do your makeup you know what works best.

Hey Bethenny, I love your show! I've been watching all of your shows since housewives of NY days! I feel like I got to know your personality through all of the shows. I think you are a strong, smart and beautiful mom. I was so happy the day you got pregnant and the day you married. I feel you deserve both for all that you have gone through in your childhood. I do feel that your divorce is a mistake. He may not be your therapist to help you get through the past but he is a good man. He is a man that still wears his ring. He is definitely a family man. I feel you can only live with drama because that is what you grew up with. Please don't allow that for your daughter and mostly yourself. You will regret it the day he finds another spouse. I feel you deserve the best and he is the best out there, even with his negatives. Hoping you make the right choice.
