Swap 'Til You Drop: Throwing a Clothing-Swap Party is On-Trend
Clothing swap parties are all the rage, but are they worth the work? Can you really end up with things that fit you and that you’ll wear? The answer is absolutely! We talked with a blogger who has hosted several clothing swaps, and we got her best tips on how to throw the perfect swap party.
Jenn Talley, a Digital Strategist at DeVries Global and blogger at Practically Fancy, has become a swapping expert after throwing several successful parties. She says you can have a blast and spruce up your wardrobe at the same time.
“I have hosted three clothing swaps,” she says. “I hosted my first one four years ago, when I belonged to a philanthropic women’s organization in California. There were 50 girls always looking for something to wear.”
Some swap parties are casual, but Jenn’s are always events. In order to make them more fun for everyone there, she takes them seriously, bringing in clothing racks, mirrors, and food.
Once there, you can assign the swapping in different ways. One that works well is to give each woman a ticket or other marker for each item she brings. Then, draw names to determine the order in which each person will choose an item. For people who bring more items, it's fair to let them choose more than once per turn.
Organization is key! As Jenn says, “It’s important for the clothing to be organized, clean, and neat.”
Being organized can lead to a social media element, too. “At my last one, we had a hashtag for social media and viewing photos on Instagram.”
With so many items to choose from, guests at Jenn’s parties always leave happy.
“Most women are happy when it’s over because they’ve offloaded items that they no longer wear and have picked up a few new-to-her items. Working in the fashion/beauty industry, my friends and I tend to do a lot of shopping, buy some trendy items, purchase high-end brands, but wear each item less frequently. Swapping is a nice way to give new life to pieces you love."
