Teeth Whitening 101: Bethenny Brightens from Candy Corn to Marshmallow

Marshmallow-white teeth is what you want. Two Chiclets up front, not so much. Bethenny test-drives a new teeth-whitening salon to share the scoop on getting your choppers to sparkle -- and how to get the most white for your wallet.

Bethenny is excited as she steps into the brand spanking new Lavaan Dental Spa in NYC. Think of Lavaan as the Dry Bar of teeth whitening -- their focus is pearly white perfection in a spa-like atmosphere. Their motto: "No drilling. No Filling. Just clean, white smiles."

While teeth may not be the first thing everyone notices, let's be real -- people are definitely judged by their teeth.

Cosmetic dentist Dr. Jeffrey Rappaport opened the new business venture less than a year ago with his wife Dr. Michelle Katz, an orthodontist. Business is growing, but Bethenny is skeptical about whether this trumps the at-home whitening trays she's tried in the past.

Dr. Rappaport says Bethenny's teeth are a seven, but promises she's going to leave with immediate results, closer to a 10. Was she pleased with the results? Here's how it all went down…

Expert Tip: While cleaning Bethenny's teeth, Dr. Rappaport noticed teeth flattening due to grinding. His advice: if you wake up with a sore jaw, run warm water over a washcloth and use to massage your jaw line. Also, it's best to invest in a night guard.

What Bethenny Had Done:
Bethenny started with "The Clean" -- a 30-minute cleaning for $89 and then had "The White" -- a 60-minute whitening treatment for $395.

How Often Should Someone Whiten Their Teeth?
"It varies by individual on how often to whiten the teeth," says Dr. Rappaport. "It really depends on the shade that they started at and their lifestyle. For those who live on coffee and red wine, touch-ups every few months are recommended. We have different touch-up options that we offer at LAVAAN and depending on if someone has a wedding or photo op we would recommend they come in before the big event."

Whitening for Less:
- Daily deal sites like Groupon, LivingsSocial, YipIt, SweetJack and more regularly offer dental discounts.

- If you know of a location in your area that offers whitening, join their Facebook page and Twitter for insider deals. Also, if they have a newsletter, sign-up.

- If your dentist offers whitening, ask about patient deals.

- Give a home remedy a try. Health magazine says the key to at-home whitening is in malic acid. Here's their remedy using a combination of strawberry and baking soda. »

"The at-home teeth whitening options are okay to use, however, I do believe that people are happiest with the results when they get the professional treatment done in office," says Dr. Rappaport.

For at-home whitening products.
Here's what we found:
- The whitening gel with the American Dental Association seal of approval »
- Good Housekeeping's list of reviewed whitening products »
- Whitening toothpastes with the American Dental Association's Seal of Approval »

Let's discuss!
1) Do you whiten your teeth? If so, how often and what's your favorite method?
2) Have you discovered an all-natural remedy that works for whitening?
3) Tell the truth -- do you judge people based on their teeth?

Girls I trul understand what your going thru..About 2 yrs ago my granddaughter ran down the stairs before me and as I rushed to catch up somehow I tripped over my pocketbook..the staircase had so many steps and of course they were made out of tile and iron. I ended busting up my face, my front teeth all cracked and I had caps in 7 of the upper front which cracked and four of them came out because of the Lil stubs under the cap that they adhere it to totally broke...it's terrible..like you I'm unable to have them fixed, financially just don't have it. I can't smile, can't eat many things. I'm so embarrassed to even talk to people..I lost my job after the accident besides my teeth, fractured my collar bone and just destroyed my back..I know I will never be hired for anything with my teeth looking like that.....ladies I know something like this just sucks every ounce of confidence out of you...I'm usually the person building your self esteem for you and pointing out all the good in you to build you up, I mean there's more to us then just teeth but when your in our situation all you think about is that...it's horrible, it monopolizes our every thought..I've gone from a happy, smiley hearty laughing person to a miserable, embarrassed person who dreads going out for the fear of being made fun of.....Hope things get better for you guys as well as myself...

Love Bethenny! Love her videos. My teeth are horrible. However, there is no way I can afford this procedure :( Your blessed Bethenny, and yes you have worked hard for it. I have worked hard too, and continue to do so. Just not financially ok. Thanks for the info though. Your a cheerful, upbeat person and I truly respect and enjoy you. God bless you and Bryn.
