Despite the things said about airport and airplane food, I have noticed some pretty amazing progress in regards to healthy options. Here's some of my tips for how to be healthy while traveling via air:
1. Pick up a healthy meal at the airport: At JFK, there are these food kiosks called Cibo Express. I couldn't believe how many low-fat, organic and pure items they carried. There is no excuse to not eat healthy at this airport. In the refrigerated section, I noticed some really nice boxed lunches (where the crunchy and fresh items are compartmentalized to prevent them from getting soggy) with grilled salmon salad, teriyaki chicken salad, and healthy sandwiches such as grilled vegetables and hummus on whole wheat bread. Additionally, there are containers with edamame and fresh fruit. I was very impressed.
2. BYOS (Bring Your Own Snacks): In the packaged goods sections at health food stores, you can find organic "greens" bars and "soy crunch" snacks which are like a healthy version of peanut brittle, as well as organic nuts, low-fat wheat-free dairy-free cookies, an assortment of cereals, and so much more. Stock up and pack these away in your carry-on to sustain you through your flight.
3. Do the best you can with what's available: I noticed on Jet Blue, the flight attendants come around with snack options. The basket has some items equivalent in health value, such as Terra Blue potato chips, Munchers, chocolate chip cookies cashews and animal crackers. For sweet, I would choose animal crackers. For protein, choose the nuts. For a salty crunch, go with the Terra Blue chips. These items contain fewer than five ingredients that you can actually pronounce. Of those three, the chips and the nuts are the best because they have the fewest ingredients (potatoes, salt and oil and nuts, salt, and oil, respectively). It does not make sense to eat things that are totally foreign to you, because guess what? They're foreign to your body, as well. Do the best you can, but EAT REAL FOOD.
